One objective of the Business and Professions Committee of the Mount Tabor Ruritan Club is to improve economic development in our community. Developing this Web Resource Guide for Economic Development for Blacksburg and the New River Valley is one of these projects. The intent is identifying, compiling and listing online resources for businesses interested in starting up, relocating to or expanding in Blacksburg and the New River Valley.

The Business/Technology Center (BTC) at Virginia Tech is a business assistance program. But it differs from the typical business-help program in four distinct ways.
  • We offer a wide variety of top-quality business services "general and specialized" because we have the ability to retain the most appropriate consultant in each case.
  • We may be able to support your company's development by absorbing part of the cost of these professional services, so that they are available to you at an affordable cost.

Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center

The CRC's Business Assistance Program is conducted by Virginia Tech’s Business/Technology Center (BTC). This center is managed by the university's Pamplin College of Business. Its purpose is to provide faculty, student, private, and public consultants to companies to solve problems. Problems can relate to any facet of corporate management including strategic planning, marketing, intellectual property, human resources, and financial management. Services are provided at below market rates. The BTC also manages an entrepreneurial library at the park.

The Business Assistance Center, which includes the New River Valley Small Business Development Center, is Radford University's primary vehicle for contributing to economic development. The Center is a "one stop shopping" center for business in need of assistance. New River Valley Economic Development Alliance

New River Valley Incubator Network

  Serving the Counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and the City of Radford offering incubator tenants counseling with business plan development, financial management and other business assistance as needed. Provides opportunities for small businesses/industry in the area. In February 1998, the Giles Business Incubator opened as a business development incubator and currently houses six (6) tenants. The New River Valley Competitiveness Center is an industrial development incubator that opened April 12, 1999 and currently has ten (10) tenants. In the early planning stage is the Jacksonville Center in Floyd County. This incubator will be dedicated to start-up artisan and craft businesses.

New River Valley Development Corporation

  The New River Valley Development Corporation is a non-profit organization which was formed in 1983 by the Counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski, and the Towns of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Pulaski, and the City of Radford. The Corporation consists of four representatives of these eight localities and one additional member appointed by the Planning District Commission. The Development Corporation is representative of business, government, finance, and civic organizations.
